Eakambraeaswarar Temple and Nila thingal thundam perumal sannidhi (A divyadesam)

  • Location: Kilambi. Periya Kanchipuram
  • Constructed by: Pallavas originally around 1509 A.D.
    • Later Cholas added to the structure.
    • 1000 pillar hall was raised during Vijayanagara period by Raja Krishna Devaraya
  • Presiding deity: Shiva as the Prithvi lingam (Lingam made of sand).
    Shiva is known as ‘Thazhuva kuzhaindaar’ as he was touched by Parvati’s embrace.
  • Consort: Parvathi as Elavaar Kuzhali
  • Legend: Ekam+Ambaram – Ekambaram
    • Shiva is considered the Lord of the mango tree under which Parvathi did penance to absolve herself off the sin of closing Shiva’s eyes playfully. When Saraswathi Devi came as river Vegavathi Parvathi quickly hugged the shiva lingam made of sand. Shiva was touched by her embrace and granted her wishes.
    • the mano tree still in the temple is supposedly 3500years old and the sthala vriksham of the temple.
    • There is a divya desam sannidhi inside the temple – Nila thingal thundam perumal with consort Lakshmi as Nila thingal thunda nayagi
    • During penance of Parvathi, Shiva wanted to test her. He sent fire. Vishnu wanting to help Parvathi reflects cool rays of the crescent moon that he got from Shiva. This cooled the fire and protected Parvathi.
    • The crescent moon that beloned to Shiva was originally given by Shiva to Vishnu while churning the ocean in koorma avatar. During the churning process, Vishnu who was in the form of a tortoise felt a lot of heat. He prayed to Shiva who cooled him down with his crescent moon.
