Makaral means Iguana. Shiva appeared in the form of Iguana to teach a lesson to his devotee.
Once a king ordered that everyday a jackfruit needs to be carried to Chidambaram Nataraja temple.
A young boy, when his turn came, burnt the jackfruit tree so that villagers will be relieved.
The king chased the boy for punishing him. A golden Iguana crossed the king and entered an anthill.
King dug the anthill and found blood oozing. He realized its Lord that taught him a lesson.
